College Lake was a working chalk quarry until the 1990s and is now a lake ringed by hides, chalk grassland and arable margins sown for farmland birds. The combination is unusual: wintering wildfowl and breeding lapwing on the water, with rare arable wildflowers and tree sparrows on the banks above.
