St Aidan's birdwatching guide
St Aidan's spreads reedbeds, open water and wet meadows across a former opencast coal mine beside the River Aire, south-east of Leeds. Entry is free for everyone; the RSPB charges non-members for the car park rather than the gate. Spring is when the site shows off — booming bitterns carry across the reedbeds and lapwings display over the wet grassland — while barn owls hunt the rough edges year-round and kingfishers move onto the open water in autumn. The paths are a mix of flat and undulating routes, with suggested accessible trails described in the reserve's own trail guide.
