How to find dartford warbler

Weather decides this one. On a still morning a Dartford warbler will sit up on a gorse sprig and sing at you; in a stiff breeze it stays down in the scrub and you will walk past a dozen without knowing.

So check the forecast before choosing the day, which is not advice that applies to most British birds. Calm, bright, and early is the combination, ideally in March or April when males are singing and the heath vegetation hasn't thickened up.

The habitat is specific: lowland heath with mature gorse, mostly across Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey and the Suffolk coast. This is not a bird you stumble across elsewhere.

It is also very small and very dark — at distance it reads as a long-tailed silhouette rather than anything with colour, and the tail is usually cocked. The give-away is the call, a scratchy buzzing note that sounds more like a stressed insect than a warbler.

One sad practical note. Dartford warblers are resident rather than migratory and they do badly in hard winters — populations crash after prolonged snow and take several years to recover. After a severe winter, expect the heaths to be much quieter than the year before, and don't assume a site that was good is still good.
